INTRODUCTION:
“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare it for today.”
-Malcolm X
Periodically with increase in c-section, pregnant mothers may develop certain anxiety before undergoing c-section which was normal human behavior. The increase in caesarian section on maternal request may reflect a true higher prevalence of fear of childbirth, or a greater tendency among women to express their fears and wishes.2
With the increase in the institutional deliveries and growing access to obstetrics care, caesarian section deliveries too have shown an increasing trend. As the incidence rate of caesarian section deliveries is increasing day by day, Primigravida mothers who are referred for caesarian section will also have an increasing level of anxiety, tension and stress.3 Anxiety in mothers can have an influence on their child at any point in the child's life. It can make it more difficult for the mother to interact with her baby, especially during times when the infant is distressed. This will show that the mother who was bearing the baby for the first time will get anxious about the whole process of delivery and the condition of baby which needed to be revealed out.4
A Study conducted on anxiety and maternal adoption in first time mother more than 25-year-old.
This prospective longitudinal study assessed relationship among variables of the early transition to parenthood and maternal stress, anxiety and adaptation one year after delivery in primipara mothers older than 25 years. It has been reported that personality-dependent anxiety reaction in primiparous patients. This being the major problem among every mother, the investigator personally felt that there is a need for the above studies and statistics and was thus inspired in the selection of this topic.5
The investigator felt need to assess the preprocedure anxiety level regarding c- section among primigravida mothers and by administering video assisted teaching program to empowering their knowledge which enhances their own and baby’s physical health as well as self-esteem.
Hence the above studies suggests that there is a lack of knowledge regarding caesarean section among primigravida mothers undergoing caesarean section which may leads to development in preprocedure anxiety among primigravida mothers and my study comes to play in filling the gaps. My study mainly focuses, to assess the preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c- section in selected hospitals. Further this study helps to rule out the lack of knowledge and ascertain what type of education to be provided to overcome the problems faced in their setup.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
1. To assess the pre-test level of knowledge regarding preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c-section at selected hospitals of Rajkot.
2. To assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching program on knowledge regarding preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c-section at selected hospitals Rajkot.
3. To determine the association between pre-test knowledge score with selected demographic variable.
4. To determine the association between post-test knowledge score with selected demographic variable.
HYPOTHESES:
H1: There will be a significant difference between pre-test and post-test level of knowledge score regarding preprocedure anxiety level of primigravida mothers undergoing c-section at selected hospitals of Rajkot.
H2: There will be a significant association between pre-test and post-test level of knowledge score regarding preprocedure anxiety level of primigravida mothers undergoing c-section at selected hospitals of Rajkot and their selected demographic variables.
MATERIAL AND METHODOLOGY:
Research approach:
Quantitative research approach.
Research design:
Pre experimental research design.
The design adopted for this study was pre experimental in nature.
It was one group pre-test post-test design.
Setting:
The study will be conducted in selected hospitals of Rajkot.
Population:
· Accessible population: primigravida mothers who meets the inclusion criteria and available at the time of data collection.
· Target population: Total population to which the researcher wants to generalize.
Sample:
Sample size:
The sample size of the study was 60 primigravida mothers undergoing c- section at selected hospitals of Rajkot.
Sample technique:
The research study was conducted by non probability purposive sampling technique.
Data analysis and interpretation:
The collected data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics.
RESULT:
Major study findings include
A. Findings related to demographic variables of the study:
1. The majority of 24 (40%) sample’s age is between 21-25 years.
2. The majority of 25 (42%) samples belong to Hindu religion.
3. The majority of 20 (33%) samples are having education of higher secondary.
4. The majority of 36 (60%) samples are living in a joint family.
5. The majority of 28 (47%) samples are having family income between Rs. 5001- Rs.10, 000.
6. The majority of 34 (57%) samples are having previous knowledge regarding c-section.
7. The majority of 29 (48%) samples are taking vegetarian diet.
8. The majority of 27 (45%) samples are having books as a source of information.
With regard effectiveness of VASTP on knowledge regarding preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c- section, the obtained ‘t’ value for the level of knowledge was 6.71 which was highly significant at p<0.05 level.
With regard to association between the levels of knowledge with their selected demographic variables such as family income had significant association found. The study showed that the calculated Chi-square value is more than the tabulated value at the level of 0.05 for these demographic variables. This showed that there was a significant association between the effectiveness of VASTP and knowledge regarding preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c- section and selected demographic variables.
CONCLUSION:
The main conclusion from this present study was that most of the primigravida mothers had inadequate and moderate level of knowledge in pre-test and they improved to moderate and adequate level of knowledge in post-test. This shows the imperative need to understand the purpose of the VASTP regarding improving the knowledge regarding preprocedure anxiety level among primigravida mothers undergoing c- section and it will improve the practice of identification of anxiety and improve the knowledge regarding c- section among primigravida mothers.
